Storage Optimizer for Confluence

Measure your storage

Run a scan at page, space or site level and read the breakdown.

Pick the right scope

The app offers the same analysis at three scopes. Which one you want depends on what you are trying to answer.

ScopeOpen it fromUse it when
PageThe ··· menu on a pageYou are cleaning up one document
SpaceThe space sidebarYou own a space and want it tidy
SiteThe Confluence apps menuYou are looking for where the quota went

Start at site level if you do not already know which space is responsible. The breakdown will point you at the space worth opening.

Reading the breakdown

Every figure the app shows is billed bytes, counted the way Atlassian counts them — decimal units, all versions included. See How Confluence bills storage for the model.

For each attachment you get:

  • Total billed size — every version added together. This is what you pay for.
  • Current version size — what the Confluence attachment list shows.
  • Version count — how many copies exist.
  • Reference status — whether any page still embeds or links to the file.

The gap between total billed size and current version size is the space you can free without affecting anything a reader opens.

Freshness of the numbers

The scopes differ in where they read from, and it is worth knowing which you are looking at:

Page scope reads live. Attachments are fetched directly for that page, so after a cleanup the number is correct immediately.

Space and site scope read through the Confluence search index. The index lags behind reality by roughly eight to nine minutes. Right after a cleanup, a space or site scan can still show attachments you already deleted.

After a large cleanup

Wait ten minutes before re-running a space or site scan, or re-check the affected pages at page scope, which reads live.

Why a total may differ from Atlassian's

If the app's figure and the one in your Confluence subscription settings do not match exactly, the usual reasons are:

  • Index lag. A space or site scan reflects the index, not the current instant.
  • Scope. A space scan covers one space. Your bill covers the site.
  • Units. Both figures use decimal units. A tool reporting binary units will be around 7% lower.
  • Permissions. The app sees only content the signed-in user can reach. A scan run by someone without access to every space returns less than the site total.
